Experiencia fantástica: A great museum displaying Egyptian pheromones and Greek civilisation. Incredible pieces of monuments, mummified animals, Egyptian mummies, statues, paintings and more! I LOVED the museum shop as I managed to get few Egyptian decorative things! It’s great to see a piece of my home country in the Netherlands

Experiencia fantástica: Great collection, top museum. Currently there is an exhibition: Byblos Again a hit, excellent presentation about this Fenician city. Lots of artifacts from the various periods in the very long history of this seaport. The faraos were keen on the cedar trees and therefore a rich connection existed for hundreds of years. Highly recommended.

Experiencia fantástica: I love this museum, interesting temporary exhibitions and firm fixed collection

Experiencia fantástica: One of the best museums of ancient artifacts I've ever seen. There are always major changes since at least two or three of their big exhibits are traded out regularly for new ones... but the heart of the collection -- Egyptian, Greek and Roman items, plus a fantastic exhibit on the Netherlands in the paleolithic through the bronze age -- stays where it is. This makes it well worth seeing more than once -- you'll find old friends, but meet new faces as well.

Experiencia fantástica: Amazing Roman collection! The oldest Antiquities museum in the country and probaby the world. The recent expositions on Doggerland and the current Emperor Domitian installation were/are delightful! Unfortunately the museum will be closed until 25th January 2022 due to Covid-19 restrictions. Silly since it was socially distanced, QR vaccination checked and everyone wore face masks. I caught the Domitian exposition the day before the latest lock down. Everyone was respectful and engaged. Informative temporary exhibit with peices from the vatican and the Met in NYC. As the last of the Flavian dynasty, Domitian was one of the most historically decisive emperors, you either love him or hate him. Rijksmuseum van oudheden is an ingaing and unique museum in a city known for its museums. A true jem for any history buff.

Experiencia fantástica: Exciting collection of ancient Egypt, Greece and Rome!

Experiencia fantástica: A must see if you are in Leiden and are interested in ancient Egypt, Rome or Greece. Despite its moderate size there is a tremendous amount to see. Quick tip: the gate separates the cafe from the exhibits but the ticket allows you to go in and out of the main exhibition area. So, you can take a refreshments break at the café and can then go back to the exhibits. We spent hours here.

Experiencia fantástica: If you are interested in Egypt you could spend hours here. Really impressive. Also nice exposition at the top floor on the Dutch antiquities, spanning from prehistoric times to Romans in the Netherlands to modern history. One remark - the airco in the museum is quite aggressive so bring layers as it does get cold, especially if you want to spend a couple hours

Experiencia fantástica: Impressive collection of Egyptian, Etruscan, Greek and Roman artifacts - very well curated. The 25 Books from Leiden That Changed the World exhibition was interesting, only 10 were important from my point of view - maybe the others were important for NL and not the world

Experiencia positiva: Great Museum. Lots of wonderful artefacts! The museum has a nice mix of artefacts and ist very intelligent designed. Everything is behind glas but the light was set up in a way that it is nearly invisible. The only negative aspect: many object specific descriptions are only in Dutch language.

Experiencia fantástica: Amazing antiques of ancient Egypt and Roman times and many of the antiques aren't replicas they are real, a must see museum in Liden

Experiencia fantástica: It is a very cool and complete museum of ancient history! Don't be fooled by photos, it's a big building with a large amount of objects so if you want to see everything properly, I would recommend you to spend here at least 3 hours. The building has 3 floors, one for ancient Egypt, another for Rome, Greece and Etruscan and the last floor for Netherlands' history. The ticket includes an audioguide, ask to the museum employees about how does it work since it is not really intuitive.

Experiencia fantástica: A fantastic museum filled with Ancient Egyptian, Roman, and Greek (also some Mesopotamian pieces) I got exhausted after seeing all exhibits and listening all audioguide content. One big issue is that so many of the labels are only in Dutch, not the most tourist friendly thing to do.

Experiencia fantástica: Great exhibition and thematic play rooms for kids. For sure I'll visit it again...the reconstruction of Caesar's face surprised. Such a nothing special face :(

Experiencia fantástica: Superb exhibition of Doggerland, which was new to me. I enjoyed every minute of my 4 hours wandering through the exhibits. Well worth a visit. Take 50c so you can put your things in a locker though. This is a shame as most museums and galleries we visit the lockers are free.

Experiencia fantástica: If you love Greek, Roman, Dutch Persian and Egypt history then this is the place to go. Loads of sculptures, coins and archaeological finds. Only thing they can do bettet is create a good walking route or start point.

Experiencia fantástica: I went to the two temporary exhibitions: Temples of Malta and Doggerland. Both were very worthwhile visiting. The first one makes me wanna visit Malta again and visit those temple sites and the second was a team eye-opener. Never realized that the North sea once was inhabited with farmlands etc. Very good exhibitions. Can really recommend them.

Experiencia fantástica: I loved this museum! Is it a short walk from the train station and it is easy to find. It was very beautiful inside with many sculptures, their is also an audio guide at the front desk if you need it.

Experiencia fantástica: Absolutely amazing experience! They had exhibits from Saqqara and it was wonderful. Saw a bust of Socrates, learned about different parts of the world during Roman times. They even had a Tutankhamen exhibit we didn't make it to because it said that we needed 45 mins to complete.

Experiencia fantástica: Excellent exhibitions, especially when considering the price. Audiotours for adults or children in many languages included in the entrance fee, and ticket is valid all day - you can leave for lunch and come back later. Ancient Egypt, Greece and Italy are covered in the permanent exhibitions, with temporary exhibitions on other topics. Plan 3-4 hours for the full museum, or about 1 hour for just the highlights.

Experiencia fantástica: It would be really nice for a weekend with the kids, friends, family, lovers to the things about Egypt, pyramids, statutes, history, culture, mummies, ...; Greece, and the roman time in the Netherlands. There is a restaurant for lunch, coffee... it was an educational museum.. :) can spend around 4 hours to see everything there. I spent only 2.5 hours so the part about Roman time in the NL was a bit rush

Experiencia fantástica: Stunning!!! If you are a big fan of ancient Egypt, you definitely need to go there. They have real temple from Egypt inside the museum!!! Great for children (group 4, NL) as a part of educational process (ancient history).

Experiencia fantástica: a lovely museum with a fixed exhibition worth a detour. the changing exhibitions are always top rate with a wonderful innovative way of displaying the artefacts. and the food in the cafe is lovely.

Experiencia fantástica: This museum is a lust for your eyes and a feast to your senses. We've enjoyed our visit to the museum together with the family. The children where inspired by al the wonders of the history.

Experiencia fantástica: This museum not only had a sense of adventure about it that would be perfect for families, but it was also educational. There was multiple sections of interest: Romans, Egyptians and more. If timed right, you can watch a captivating light show projected onto a replica Egyptian building. Lockers were provided for free for any additional bags or coats you may have on you. Perfect. Audio tours were free and could either be in Dutch or English. These were very clever in the way you scan an artifact and you could here the information about it. The shop was on the expensive side but had a variety of gifts that could be bought to remember your day out. Could be visited in a whole day if done in detail but can also be done in a couple of hours. I would recommend this museum of interesting artefacts to anybody interested in history, perhaps in particular eiple interested in the history of the Netherlands. Families would be suitable but be prepared for a lot of facts! Some school parties were there, but the museum was large enough for you not to be disturbed by anybody. Overall, I would definitely say, visit this museum! Enjoy, have fun, and maybe there will be a concert on when you go as well!

Experiencia fantástica: Amazing museum. 13.50 euros, but a great infrastructure. So many beautiful artefacts and interesting expositions.

Experiencia fantástica: Great Greek, Roman, Egyptian and Etruscan collections. Went to see the Nineveh exhibition too, was nicely constructed and narrated. Artifacts are not merely shown but also contextualised and their significance explained. Great museum, highly recommended for enthusiasts of antiquity.

Experiencia fantástica: Amazing museum with great collections.visit the floor with Egyptian collection, real mummies there, and roman and greek collections on the next floor are wonderful, we really enjoyed our stay there for half a day

Experiencia fantástica: Good Museum for kids learning about ancient romans ... the best part is the “show” that runs around 5 minutes on the Ancient Greek temple. As it’s located in the heart of the city best to public transport or bike .

Wolf Peutz 5 years ago

Experiencia fantástica: This is a great museum in Dutch and English with a great Egyptian exhibit were you can see bits of ruins, artifacts and mummy's of course. The ancient Greek and Roman exhibits are also very good there is also a tiny collection of Indonesian artifacts. The museum's cafe and shop are also very good. This is a must go to place if you are in Leiden.

Experiencia fantástica: Great museum with wide range of exhibits from ancient Egypt, Greek, Roman and local history.

Sebastiaan Zeeff 5 years ago

Experiencia fantástica: The atmosphere in this museum is great, as you're literally surrounded by pieces of human history. The ground floor of the museum is dedicated to Ancient Egypt and includes themes such as the Egyptian after life and death rituals, religion, and the differences between the different periods and dynasties. The first floor houses the permanent expositions of Roman history, late ancient Greece history and the ancient Near-East. The top floor houses the permant collections of Dutch Archeology, the Romans in the Netherlands and the early ancient Greece period. In addition to these permanent expositions, the museum also has temporary displays and expositions. As education plays a big role in this museum, it's very suitable for kids. There are several different educational scavenger hunts and games available to make a visit very exciting for children. The flip side is that there are always plenty of children roaming the museum during school vacations and weekends, so if you don't like that, plan your visit accordingly. A small 'but' is that some of the signs and descriptions in the museum are written only in Dutch and not translated to English. A big compensation for that is the free English audio tour visitors can use by picking up one of the listening devices at the entrance.
