Expérience fantastique: Just back from Amsterdam with group of students. The Africa/Apartheid exhibition in this stunning building was outstanding. The interior space is far more substantial than I thought. A great place for Photography in Europe. Different yet just as good as Foam - maybe better?

Expérience fantastique: Lovely collection! Definitely will visit again :)

Expérience fantastique: A small but exciting museum of photography. It's a conservative place compared to Foam.

Expérience fantastique: Great photography museum with a small garden

John Butler-Gould 1 year ago

Expérience fantastique: Located within the "9 Streets" area, Huis Marseilles on Keizergracht canal consists of two monumental 17th century canals houses which together form the city's oldest photography museum. It was also the first museum of its kind in the Netherlands when it opened its doors in 1999. The museum offers a superb collection ever changing photographs from outstanding local and international photographers which are displayed across 14 exhibition areas. There is normally a new collection every 3 months. Huis Marseilles also has regular showings from its own collection of contemporary photography. The museum is worth a visit simply to admire the glorious merchant houses dating back to 1665 and retaining many of the original features. The garden at the rear is a virtual oasis of peace. There is a small garden house which is also an exhibition area. The library and book shop are also worth a visit. The original building owes its name to a plaque still in existence at the front which was erected by the original owner who arrived at the city by boat from Marseilles and went on to accumulate his riches.

Expérience fantastique: Often very good exhibitions!

Expérience fantastique: #1 museum in amsterdam for photo fans. Typically showing smaller artists then FOAM but that adds to how close you can get to the artist in what are often personal exhibitions.

Expérience fantastique: An amazing museum of photography! Especially the floor with the Polaroid photos is the best and most beautiful in my personal opinion! Highly recommended! Very nice experience!

Expérience fantastique: A wonderful museum of photography, with carefully selected exhibitions. Currently they have an exhibition consisting of works of 4 artists focusing on the beauty and the pain in the world. A big plus is that the artists are very diverse and coming from different cultural and economical backgrounds. The building itself is beautiful, and makes the experience even more amazing- a lovely surprise is a little garden with views of Amsterdam architecture, and there is also an extra small building for exhibitions. They also have a small but lovely library downstairs, where you can browse through photography albums. Definitely worth a visit, one of the best museum in Amsterdam:)

Expérience fantastique: Beautiful canal house. Exhibitions are thoughtfully curated, often a little edgy material. Easy way to spend an hour.

Expérience fantastique: Marvelous place. I made a visit for Charlotte Dumas art which I can express in - The beauty of existence.

Expérience fantastique: If you ever wondered how canal houses look inside, this is the place to go! Nicely restored, well maintained, open spaces, including a nice exhibition.

Expérience fantastique: I really like this museum for the beautiful building and the choice of artists. I love photography and this is the right place to be. Usually quite quiet as well.

Expérience fantastique: This is wonderful photo museum located in 17th century buildings. It is an experience. The layout of the displays on different floor and in a variety of rooms. It invites to you to slow down and take in the art. Beautiful variety of sizes in the 13 galleries. There are a lot stairs

Expérience positive: A magnificent 17th century building with a garden and big display rooms with a few photographs on the wall. The quality of the photos are quite dependent on the photographer and the beholder. The photos of Luc Delahay are currently on display until May 2022. We were really disappoined and felt the photos lacked luster and presence. The photos from Japanese photographers were interesting, however, there were very few works on display . I am uncertain if the price is worth visiting the museum. There are better museums in the Amsterdam area, like the Museum van Loon and the Oude Kerk at the Dam, which has a yearly world press photo exhibition that is more interesting. I can't recommend this museum... unless you happen to like the photographer that is currently being shown.

Expérience fantastique: Small photography museum on the Keizersgracht. Located in two beautifully restored (17th century?) houses. All rooms are located on the different floors in the houses, connected by small staircases (I believe there's an elevator too. Nice exhibitions. Not overloaded with visitors, which is good.

Expérience fantastique: Visited this museum late August and really enjoyed how they set up every space. The whole building and gardens are very authentic Amsterdam which is reason enough for a visit. It surprised me that the exhibition went beyond just photography.

Expérience fantastique: This is a small photography museum made inside an old Dutch house. The shows are usually really good and well curated. Check what’s on and look up the artist before going as there is no permanent collection. The old house is also amazing on its own with the beautiful design and the cascading trees outside the window. Don’t miss details like the glass chandeliers

Expérience fantastique: My favourite gallery in Amsterdam is situated inside two adjoining canal houses on Herengracht. It’s a stone’s throw from Amsterdam’s other renowned photography gallery, Foam, and given a choice I’d always head to Huis Marseilles. Sitting around the corner from busy shopping street Leidsestraat, it offers a mixture of contemporary and classic photography from the Netherlands and beyond.

Expérience fantastique: This museum was one of my favourite museums in Amsterdam. It is based in a traditional Dutch canal house and hast a very fascinating exhibit that would take you back and tell you all about it. They even offer €1 coins for lockers to put your bags and belongings in.

Expérience fantastique: Nicely restored house at one of the most famous canals in Amsterdam where you'll find exhibitions of Photography Art. We visited an Exposition on Photography and Fashion and enjoyed the high quality of the pictures as well as the way they were exposes. It's not crowded by tourist and you can take all the time in the world to enjoy this place.

Expérience fantastique: What a fantastic gallery! Located in a really beautiful spot and inside an amazing building with a lot of history. Offers a changing exhibition throughout the year. Well worth a visit! Take your camera and be prepared to climb a lot of stairs - there are a lot of different levels, nooks and crannies to explore.

Expérience fantastique: Love this place. I’ve been there twice now a few years apart. It’s affordable (less than 10 euros, less than 5 for students). The building is charming. There’s a back garden. Two areas with five floors. The layout is nice, and there’s an elevator. The gift shop also has a lot of beautiful photography works and books, as well as cheap postcards.

Expérience fantastique: One of the leading museums of photography in Amsterdam, located in a historic building on the gracht. Very pleasant and inspiring to visit, due to the interesting space and carefully selected exhibits, showing the best in photography rather than catering to the popular taste. Exhibits a wide variety of styles, topics and eras.

Expérience fantastique: Visited "Amsterdam stuff", was really cool to see perfect work by Willem van Zoetendaal and Harold Strak

Expérience fantastique: Three weeks on and I still remember how much that gallery affected me. How it almost moved me as a space, if that's even possible. The show that was on wasn't of any personal interest but the building...intimate, quiet, imposing but not intrusive, it was a joy to walk in. And those massive windows, they made me feel like I was in a house that I wanted to get very comfortable in. It doesn't look it but it's a massive space split up in two buildings and the up and down of stairs adds a 'getting lost' sense that in a space like that is very welcome. It's a unique experience and I'll definitely add it to my necessary stops list next time I'm in Amsterdam.

Expérience fantastique: Beautiful exhibits in a charming traditional Dutch building. Each room brings its own light and atmosphere which complete immerses you in the artist’s view. The back of the building has a small garden in which you can take a moment to appreciate calmness in a busy day. The museum itself is not as busy as the Van Gogh or the Risjk, so I highly recommend it to people who don’t enjoy large crowds.

Expérience fantastique: It was a very nice surprise. Not only the exhibition by Berenice Abbott was full of great photographs describing the grow of New York city around the 30s, but the house where the museum is located is also beautiful.

Expérience fantastique: Really cool museum featuring an interesting selection of primarily African photographers. Introduced me to another world that broadened my view of issues and ideas that these photographers wanted to portray. There was also a very interesting installation that featured black/white manipulated video clips and an ongoing eerie music clip. Very immersive and made me experience feelings that I cannot put into words. Would definitely recommend as this was also a very affordable museum (€4.50 with a student card).

Expérience fantastique: Absolutely love Huis Marseille! I went there five times already and never got disappointed. They have amazing photographs and exciting exhibitions. They curate everything in a very nice way and you walk out with the feeling to have learned something about the presented topics. Great place!

Expérience fantastique: If you are into photography this is going to be a magical experience for you! Visited in April 2018 and the shows were simply amazing. So many artists such a good citation and a holistic approach. The supportive text was also good giving context to the photographs. Lastly, the interior of the building is so so so impressive that makes the whole experience even better! Plus they have nice and friendly staff, happy to help with large groups, students, lockers etc.

Expérience fantastique: Nice museum. One of the smaller museums in Amsterdam, but a very nice venue. The museum occupies two canal houses, giving visitors also the opportunity to take a closer look at those houses from the inside. The museum regularly features great photography exhibitions.

Expérience fantastique: Museum for photography with an outstanding quality of exhibitions. Topics on show vary, so be sure to check the website or social media feeds. Building itself is also great to walk through, with so many different spaces and rooms, including a nice view on the canal. Don’t forget the garden in the back!

Expérience fantastique: Very pretty museum! The pictures were lovely and the staff were super helpful. The gift shop is rather nice as well.

Kyrsten Carlson (kykapoo) 5 years ago

Expérience fantastique: It's sparse, though they say seven floors. The North Korea exhibit was very fascinating, we know about it, but to see it is something else. It felt like the Israeli/Palestine exhibit was lacking some context. A comparison to the Berlin Wall could have been very moving, but as it is, not a ton of emotion is envoked.

Expérience fantastique: Beautiful canal house, exclectically decorated with masterpieces. With a fascinating Bible museum upstairs. Definitely worth a visit.

Expérience fantastique: This was my first visit to this unique museum/gallery - and it was a delight to explore throughout. If you have mobility issues, beware - traditional steep Dutch stairs to be navigated in high heels (slowly while hanging onto the railing), and then suddenly you're in an Escher print.... a superb space to compliment the exhibitions.
