Expérience fantastique: I had a good experience visiting the Jewish Historical museum. Recommend it to everyone who is interested in history and culture. Also, the museum workers were very nice and helpful. :)

Expérience fantastique: An absolutely interesting experience. It manages to capture what I’d call the beginning, middle and future of the Jewish history.

Expérience fantastique: An eye opening experience on the experiences of Jewish people who have lived and are living in Amsterdam.

Expérience fantastique: Amazing children's museum, introducing people to family life and the festivals. A lovely lady spoke to us about Jewish life in Amsterdam. The main museum covered the history of the Jewish community from political enlightenment through to the Holocaust, ending with a synagogue full of artefacts. There is also a cafe. The ticket also gave access to the Portuguese Synagogue on the other side of the road, which is a magnificent building (in need of some TLC).

Expérience fantastique: I thoroughly enjoyed my visit to this museum. The photos exhibits were great, especially the one on Palestinian students in Tel Aviv. Make sure and visit the Portuguese Synagogue too, it is a very special spot.

Expérience fantastique: Nice museum where you can learn more about the discreet Jewish presence in the Netherlands during the last few centuries. Nice souvenir shop with curated objects

Expérience fantastique: Lovely museum. Learned a lot about the Jewish culture from this area.

Expérience fantastique: Very happy to get an insight on the Jewish culture

Expérience fantastique: It's a great museum based in the two huge synagogues. It represents in a short form a review of the Dutch Jewish culture and history, from the 15th to the 20th century. The Portuguese synagogue is the orthodox one. Both were fascinating.

Expérience fantastique: Very good to know about the Jewish culture, religion and all-the-time sad history. A lot of old videos and interviews on the interactive screens, worth watching. Characteristic objects on display. Ladies at the entrance give very nice directions and advice of the route. Museum is not very big, but a lot of photos and videos (of marriage, Tora scripts writing, or theater Tuschinski show) require 2 hours of exploring. And you will start from a synagogue :) The only drawback is that they close the children museum at 16:45, 15 minutes prior to the closing time.

Expérience fantastique: After visiting the synagogue, we went to the museum to see the exhibits. Museum has beautiful decorated open spaces. We visited the archive and we were able to search the books about Jews in the Caribbean and continue our search for Semah de Valencia family.

Expérience fantastique: Entrance to here is 17€, but includes entrance to Portuguese synagogue and Holocaust museum (or it's free with the Museumkaart). Museum has some great interactive exhibits and is very modern (probably the most modern of any museum I've been to in Amsterdam) it includes a free audio tour.

Expérience fantastique: The museum is a good combination of history and art. The ticket also gives you a chance to visit the portugese synagogue. A beautiful and tranquil place still lighted with candles.

Expérience fantastique: The importance of centres like this one cannot be expressed in words. That the people who suffered be remembered and honoured is the very least we can do for them. I really like the interactive screens with the interviews and particularly the film clips from life in the Jewish quarter of Amsterdam back in the 1920s and 30s. Thank you to all the staff and volunteers and artists who make this place so special

Expérience fantastique: Must see museum in Amsterdam. Beautiful interactive storytelling and ever-changing exhibitions. The library is an amazing resource for research into the Jewish heritage in the Netherlands. The Portugese Synagogue is stunning and a combined with the audio tour you get a glance at the history and modern times.

Expérience fantastique: Great museum detailing the history of the Sephardi and Ashkenazi Jews in Holland, and giving much insight into their Religious practices . Museum is set in the first synagogue built in Amsterdam. Ticket also allows admission to the Portuguese Synagogue close by, and the Holocaust Museum a short distance away. There is much to study here, so you should come away feeling enriched.

Expérience fantastique: Thoroughly enjoyed this museum. I think non-Jews would enjoy the religion section as it is very thorough and gives a great walkthrough of Judaism which can be pretty confusing to outsiders. Definitely an interesting way to spend an hour as a non-Dutch Jew.

Expérience fantastique: Very interesting museum, and the ticket includes too the entrance to the Portuguese sinagoga which is beautiful and the Holocaust museum.

Cheryl Camilleri 4 years ago

Expérience fantastique: The cost of a ticket gives access to four 'attractions' within the city's Jewish quarter, which in itself is very reasonable. This museum was very insightful, provided lots of information, quite interactive and educational for visitors keen to learn about the religion, and the people's history in Amsterdam and the rest of the country. We thoroughly enjoyed it, thank you.

Expérience fantastique: Great story that should never be forgotten. The building has no electricity. Evening services are done by candlelight.

Expérience fantastique: The Childrens museum is super interesting and enjoyable. For kids of all ages and parents too. There are lots of wonderful activities like baking Jewish bread (Challe), colouring, watching videos, making music, jumping around, writing Hebrew, discovering all the Jewish celebs and playing games.

Expérience fantastique: An excellent overview of Jewish culture and the impact the 1930-40s had. The ground floor explains different items, traditions and rituals with in-depth information. The upper floor is dedicated to the impact of the 1930-40s. Please note that this isn't the Holocaust museum, that is only a few minutes walk away and included with the same ticket. I had lunch here and that was great! Friendly staff and a delicious pear tart (highly recommended!!).

Expérience fantastique: Interesting presentation style with use of audio guide and video stations. We visited the museum in the same day as the Anne Frank house ( after) and felt that was a good combination. Our visit was followed by the Holocaust museum. Albeit heavy, we felt it was important to see these. Would probably recommend changing order to Anne Frank house, Holocaust museum, then this museum for a lighter finish.

Expérience fantastique: Firstly, it was really interesting, all things inside this museum are beautiful. You can ask the entrance for a free audio tour, which is cool to hear the story meanwhile you are visiting.

Expérience fantastique: I enjoyed visiting this museum much more than I thought I would and wish I'd visited it sooner. I've been avoiding it for over a year because I assumed it would be a Holocaust museum centered on Anne Frank, and Holocaust museums tend to make me feel rather melancholy. This museum focuses less on tragedy, and more on the relationship between the Jewish community and the city of Amsterdam. The museum is on the smaller side and is divided into three sections: 1) The Jewish faith and its traditions, 2) History of where the Jews came from and how their community was formed in Amsterdam, as well as their early relationship with Dutch natives, and 3) Modern history of what prejudices they've endured while becoming assimilated in the Netherlands, how the Jewish Quarter was affected by WWII, and how the community healed afterwards. There also appears to be temporary exhibitions as well. When I visited, it was about the Jewish support of Dutch royalty.

Expérience fantastique: Very nice! Bought a ticket and got access to the museum, the synagogue and to the Holocaust memorial and museum :-) the JHM is full of information not only about WW2, but also about everyday life after and other very informative things you should explore yourself. Also very moving stories of people from Amsterdam :-) Downstairs is a gallery of Jewish musicians or musicians with Jewish roots - very interesting! Was definitely worth a visit!

Expérience fantastique: Well built the Dutch Jewish history museum. The ticket includes entrance to four more other related sites, like the Portuguese synagogue across the street. Highly recommended.
