Expérience fantastique: If you are in Holland, Haarlem is a place you should not miss. When you are there, you start basically from Frans Hals. It is rather a tiny Museum. After seing amazing masterpiece portraits from dutch master Frans Hals, after drinking coffe in the garden middle of this amazing building which is beautifully hidden in the city, it will definitely stay in your memories as one great museum.

Expérience positive: First we were a bit shocked by the huge entry cost of 16€. But with the 15min Film and very good audioguide the museum is it worth. Paintings and also the building itself are well described. It was a poor children home. Some Breugel and other dutch painters can be seen. We spend 2,5 hours. Very nice is also the inner yard. In summer is there a cafe.

Expérience fantastique: Lovely old building, nothing grand! Pretty inner courtyard and garden. Hals is placed in historical/artistic context in first rooms. Some comparisons to modern works seem more followable than others... Big room full of Hals's group paintings and after his last paintings, those of the women and men (separate) who ran the old people's home that the building once was! Very enthusiastic mini-tour about the building's history by a talented young female guide. She took us back to look at some details of paintings we'd have missed otherwise... Thanks! Apparently Hals's later work was a big influence on the impressionists. Speedy approximate brushstrokes capturing character and movement... Only grumble that the staff selling entrance tickets are also manning the souvenir shop. We had to wait ages while some customer bought endless stamps for all his postcards. Is this a village shop or a modern museum in a major Dutch city?

Expérience fantastique: Wonderful museum focused on stunning Hals' paintings. Everything is translated in English (normally, it's not in the Netherlands). If you are around, don't miss it

Expérience fantastique: We were fortunate to see the (temporary) exhibit up now with the civic guard paintings. If you are a Frans Hals fan-this is a must see. In general, this is a lovely, well-curated museum.

Expérience fantastique: Nicely curated small museum, friendly personnel and good (free) audio guides. The short film at the beginning was helpful to grasp the essence of Hals and his works. Highly recommended a visit if you’re in Haarlem.

Expérience fantastique: The museum was established in 1862. In 1950, the museum was split in two locations when the collection of modern art was moved to the Museum De Hallen (since 2018 called Hal). The main collection, including its famous 17th-century Frans Hals paintings, for which the museum is named, is located in the former Oude Mannenhuis on the Groot Heiligland. The museum was founded in 1862 in the newly renovated former Dominican church cloisters located in the back of the Haarlem city hall known as the Prinsenhof, and when it needed more space, it moved to the recently vacated location of the town orphanage in 1913. The collection is based on the large number of paintings owned by the City of Haarlem, which includes over 100 artworks seized from Catholic churches in the 1580s after the Protestant Reformation, and Haarlem art rescued from demolished local buildings from the 15th century onwards.

Expérience fantastique: Interesting museum, classic and modern works put together to create a path and highlight how the same subject can be used to create different messages

Expérience positive: Beautiful museum that I visited during ‘Museum in Bloom’ exhibition. You can admire here various paintings from the Dutch Golden Age era as well as furniture, ceramics, glass and silver. The art and interior was looking amazing with live flowers arranged through the whole museum. Children really enjoyed watching the Doll House. The patio is very beautiful with many benches and tables. Also the cafe is a great addition (the terrace is a reall hidden gem, especially when it’s sunny). I’d not recommend visiting it with little children (up to 3-4 year old) as I was asked to hold my little one by hand at all times. It was fine, but not really easy or handy.

Expérience fantastique: I visited only one of the 2 locations of the Frans Hals museum. I visited Hof. It is a beautiful museum displaying the works of artists that operated (not necessarily born) in Haarlem during the 17th century, with the most famous one of which is Frans Hals upon whom the museum is named! The museum was established in 1862 and it is located in a former “Oude Mannenhuis” which is what could be referred to as a retirement home these days. The structure is well preserved with beautiful original blue-delft and beautiful halls. The exhibition is also further decorated with beautiful flower arrangements which absolutely adds to the unique atmosphere this museum offers.

Expérience fantastique: many old arts, under 18 is free, audio tour is also free they have some modern arts (not many) scattered throughout the old ones, sometimes they seem kinda out of place the atmosphere is also out of place, it doesn't really feel like a museum with old dutch masterpieces

Expérience fantastique: Excellent selection of Art.

Expérience fantastique: Such a good collection, and they do a wonderful job of contextualizing why his paintings are so special. I loved staring at the effects of his textures, and how alive his subjects seemed. I think anyone with an interest in art/portraiture would be charmed by this collection.

Expérience fantastique: A most interesting and delightful museum in the charming old Haarlem city center, enclosed by three prominent canals and the meandering river Spaarne. The museum features a great variety of old paintings, among which, of course, some by Frans Hals, also his brother Dirck Hals, born and raised in Haarlem, furthermore Jan Steen and other ‘old’ Dutch painters. The museum also features household silverware, china and pottery from the Dutch Golden Age… The museum is situated in a beautiful old street that runs into the beautiful Kampervest, on the south-east edge of the old city center. Expérience fantastique: Due to CoVID19, they were a bit more strict about reserved entrance time. We were a few hours late but luckily was let in. Your physical museum card is expected but they were fine with the scanned version. They have nice locker area at the entrance so you don't have carry them around. Beautiful paintings was organized in different topic.

Expérience fantastique: If you love northern renaissance art or portraiture, you must take the city bus from Amsterdam to tour this lovely town and visit the museum. We spent a very pleasant afternoon in Harlaam to see the work of the best portrait artist of his time. I must visit again.

Expérience fantastique: Beautiful, and smartly curated museum space dedicated to a great master who was 250 years ahead of his time, and who greatly influenced those who followed in the late 19th Century. The walk from the train station is pleasant and also worth doing. Highly recommend.

Expérience fantastique: The museum was the first place we visited in Haarlem. We were satisfied. They were with a small child, 1 year old, and she was delighted too. In the morning very few people and enough spacious. I recommend to start exploring the city from this museum, and you will not regret.

Expérience fantastique: Wonderful display the painting of the artist. His paintings are excellent and Rembrandtesque. I have never heard of his name before and look at his paintingbthe first time I thought that it was Rembrandt! There were excellent bouquets of spring flowers display during my soring time visit too.

Expérience fantastique: Super cool museum about Frans Hal. They paired contemporary artists with pieces by Frans Hal in order to give a more recent look at some of the Dutch Golden Era Art. Even as someone not too into older pieces of art, I found the mix between the two eras to be refreshing and incredibly interesting. This museum is definetely worth the money to check out.

Expérience fantastique: Such a fascinating museum. My visit was considerably enhanced by the current show The Global Table. I only realised that silver goblets and other items started to appear in Dutch paintings after early colonialisation had begun. Fascinating!

Expérience fantastique: We LOVED the Frans Hals Museum. They recently updated many sections to incorporate the classic art with modern pieces. The juxtaposition opened up new ways to view both styles and was captivating. They also had a do-your-own self portrait exhibit which I enjoyed very much.

Expérience fantastique: Super cool museum with beautiful portraits! Not maybe the best museum if you're with kids but they do have a section with dress up stuff. Was able to see a painting be analyzed for authenticity to being a Frans Hals, which was also neat to read about.

Expérience fantastique: Excellent museum, great combination of eras of art from artists based in Amsterdam or about the city. Wonderful experience, very good audio guide. The Civic Guard room is amazing and the museum is not too crowded so you can take your time and appreciate the unique art around you.
