Expérience fantastique: Super. Lots to see and something for all ages. One of those places that you have to return to as you find new bits each visit. Very well done.

Expérience fantastique: What a great place to visit, so much to see here. Your ticket lets you visit throughout the year, which is good as there's too much to see in one visit. The Christmas Victorian street was magical. Really helpful staff as well.

Expérience fantastique: Brilliant day out! Such an incredible place to learn about past events! Only down side a little be crowded in certain places and chaotic in the smaller exhibits.

Expérience fantastique: Fantastic! The tiger came to tea was on when we went and my little one loved it! We both loved everything here and easily spent a few hours exploring everything, lots of areas to go through, accessible too which is great, outdoor area is lovely too, and some games to play too!

Expérience fantastique: A must see. Much bigger than expected and well worth the entry fee. The lighting is very dark though so take into consideration along with uneven pathways. Lots to see and a great experience. Highly recommended

Expérience fantastique: An amazing place to visit, fantastic desk staff, so welcoming. The museum takes you through the ages, the historical artifacts are amazingly recreated in displays depicting the era. Kirkgate was definitely our favourite, hunting for fire marks, as we passed the shops. The prison section is eerie, and very informative. We've visited twice now- first visit took 3 and a bit hours, 2nd visit just short of two.

Expérience fantastique: This place is awesome. So much to see, I think we spent about 2-3 hours here. The best hit for me was the prison and being able to go in cells of people like Duck Turpin. The Victorian street was good though, the smells and sounds were so realistic. Not expensive to enter and ticket is valid for a year so why wouldn’t you. Cafe here and a shop. Really is worth a visit, kids would love it.

Expérience fantastique: By far one of the best museum experiences I've ever had, it really involves you into the history instead of just simply reading about it and looking at some photos or artifacts. A lot of it was quite interactive with many different history eras to learn about and even try and experince yourself. It shows you fashion, toys, streets, food and lifestyle, body image, womens history, York's history and war. You feel emotional seeing what the past was like and even has points where you can write your opinion on certain areas. Without spoiling too much of the experince I won't explain everything you can do, but definitely the main event was the rebuilt victorian street of York where you can walk around this street in York but completely back in time! You really feel like you're in that era with staff members dressed like back then and sounds to make you feel like you're actually there! Definitely recommend visiting this museum, definitely worth the money.

Expérience fantastique: Well worth the time. As well as the 'headline' exhibition about the prison, this is also the home of a fascinating social history museum about how we have changed how we live our lives (for better and for worse) over the past 400 years. Look out for the World War 1 and body shape/fashion galleries!

Expérience fantastique: Really good day out for the family. First class museum with so much to see and do within it. Would highly recommend going

Expérience fantastique: Great place to visit. See the Victorian Street with all the shops. Visit the prisons and count yourself lucky you won't have to stay! It is a voyage through time. It is very interesting. Kids love all the exhibits. I guess for little ones it is more interactive and fascinating than 'normal' museums. I recommend a visit if you have the opportunity.

Expérience fantastique: This is the best museum in York with lots of historical artifacts and access to the old prisons included in the admission price.

Expérience positive: Museum is well kept and all the notice boards are well maintained and full of interesting facts. The reconstructed street scene is amazing with lots of period shops. The prison has amazing graffiti. Kept my 5 year old entertained for 2 hours so would keep older kids or adults interested for much longer. Toilets are frequent/central and well maintained. Worth the entry fee definitely.

Expérience fantastique: Well worth entry fee and could have spent all day here. Would be excellent for children, staff are very knowledgeable and the variety of displays shows life throughout the ages in a very interactive way.

Expérience fantastique: One of the best and varied museums in the UK. From an immersive Victorian English Street, to your favourite childhood toys and a standout exhibition where you can follow the lives of particular individuals throughout WW1. In fact we enjoyed it so much we unfortunately missed the two big exhibitions on the 1960s and the prisons, after spending a few hours at the museum already.

Expérience fantastique: Enjoyable free if you are on UC... Not all areas are accessible to wheelchairs etc, but you get a reduced price for that too... The staff are very knowledgeable and are happy to tell you history of exhibits etc

Expérience fantastique: Fantastic museum to visit. You need to allow a good 3 hours to go round it all. The victorian cobbled Street was amazing. Loved the way its all set out, a real feel of victorian life. There are quizzes and things for children to keep them entertained to. Very informative, takes you through the decades, very nostalgic. Nice little souvenir shop which is reasonably priced. Then you can grab a coffee and cake in the little cafe.

Expérience fantastique: Very nice museum. Plenty read walking round. Found the war exhibition very intresting and was impressed with the original street put inside. Highly recommended and we will be using the free 12 month return later this year.

Expérience fantastique: A fabulous trip back in time! Spent about 1.5 to 2 hours exploring this fantastic museum, with so much to see and learn. Hopefully the images show you a good overview of what’s to see. Good for families too Car park nearby, toilets, cafe, and shop. We especially loved the Victorian Street with sounds and even Smell! The museum is in two parts, all easy walking. If your in York, this is a must visit. Tickets also last one year.

Expérience fantastique: Brilliant day out. Very good experience through the ages. Loved walking down the victorian street

Expérience fantastique: So much to see, period rooms, toys, strange collections, terrifying old prison cells with talking holograms, imagine yourself in WW1 trench. Good to see part, then have a rest in cafe before seeing the rest. If you have mobility issues and you can't manage all of it as there are stairs etc, they will offer a ticket reduction. Activities for children. Small but good shop.

Expérience fantastique: First time visiting York castle museum and we were really pleased we did. There was no wait to enter, we were greeted by a very lovely lady who gave us all the information we needed to start the tour around the museum. It was really fun to see different room set ups. One in the 60s-80s era reminded my mum of her grandmothers living room! The toy section was very interactive for children, we enjoyed solving the clues. The bricks experience was a great addition for the Easter break. Overall well worth the ticket price, lots for children to see, learn and play. As well as adults experiencing the sights, sounds and atmosphere on the victorian street. Can't wait to return!

Expérience fantastique: Arrival , a short queue for unbooked tickets, a staff member standing there. He didn't ask if we had tickets or not,we had to ask him, we had pre booked. Then he said "well don't go past me without proving it" he hadn't asked to see before that, I know you are all volunteers but customer service is important. Once in though the museum is just fantastic. So much to see. It's pretty much in two halves, we are glad the ticket covers a year because we have to return to do 'sixties' side and prison also the mill It's an amazing collection of artefacts in a historical setting The guide in the Victorian street was very friendly and knowledgeable, doing a talk there was only us two there but he gave us so much information. Small souvenir shop, but they had my fridge magnet. Cafe looks good but we ran out of time...those of limited mobility would be able to access street scene but other areas are up and down stairs, prison end has a lift Definitely returning here as soon as we can.

Expérience fantastique: This place is wonderful! My husband's tolerance level for museums is about one hour...we were here for almost 3 hours. It covers a wide variety of subjects, from clothing, history, a Victorian street (fantastic) and historical artifacts. We would definitely recommend it.

Expérience fantastique: We visited the museum today (Saturday afternoon) If we'd known how big it was, we'd have planned our day better. Be aware its only open 11-4. The exhibitions are fantastic, it is definitely suitable for all ages. Lots of activities and stuff for the children to do, and plenty of reading and observing for the more serious people lol. We spent an hour, as had to rush round, could easily spent 3-4 hours. The Victorian Street was such a fantastic experience

Expérience fantastique: Very interesting. A museum of how humans are “interesting” to be sure. Videos of PE through the ages, fashion standards that confirm how much we conform and want to impress others. For example, women during WW2 couldn’t get hose so they would dye their legs with tea and use eyeliner to draw the seam. Actual Victorian street. Great staff. Big museum built in an old prison and it showcases the medieval castle walls.

Expérience fantastique: Another great place to visit in York. Turned up today 29/9/21, hadn't pre booked a ticket but staff were most helpful in getting me a time slot at 1pm which was great for myself. In all a great attraction to visit you can definitely spend a good 2 hours plus here look around

Harry Heathfield 2 years ago

Expérience fantastique: Whilst we didn't look around the museum, we spent hours sitting on the benches outside, drawing the building. We were able to access the cafe and facilities in the museum, which was appreciated. There's a good selection of cafe snacks and independent drinks from a German lemonade brand (lovely). I'll be back someday to look around the museum; there's so much to see in York, but I think this place should be on the list.

Expérience fantastique: To me it’s the best museum of York. It is very interesting and very well decorated. Specifically the Victorian streets area… I was the happiest girl ever to wander around. And the fact that you can enter inside some shops is fantastic. I had the best time there!

Expérience fantastique: We didn't book in advance I'd suggest you do if thinking of a visit. We did finally get in after a large queue had formed. It was worthwhile we thoroughly enjoyed it informative and interesting I would recommend a visit. However I must just add the photograph being show when searching for the museum is incorrect. The picture shown is of Yorks courthouse!!

Expérience fantastique: We visited last week and we are not normally museum goers, but this was a lot of fun. There is so much to see and learn about what life used to be like. We also got to walk around genuine jail cells, very spooky! I would definitely return.
