Expérience fantastique: The museum of the Dutch East Indies in a broad sense. I went there for a lecture by the historian Vilan van de Loo about her book An Honorable Existence, a history of the KNIL, 1814 - 1950. The KNIL was the colonial army of the Netherlands in Indonesia. Vilan gave a fine lecture. My father, a white man, also ended up in the KNIL as a conscript from the Netherlands. In mid-1948 he was assigned to the Special Troops Detachment (DST) as an intelligence officer. The DST was the predecessor of both the Korps Commando Troops of the Royal Netherlands Army and of KOPASSUS, the command unit of the Indonesian armed forces. The DST consisted mainly of Indonesian soldiers. The official language was Malay, Bahasa Indonesia. I felt like reading Vilan's book once. It is a serious historical book based on source material. It's about facts. It is therefore probably less suitable for leftist politically correct idiots.
