Esperienza fantastica: The Museum of Arts and Crafts is a Brazilian museum located in the city of Belo Horizonte. Inaugurated on December 14, 2005, it is the first Brazilian museum project dedicated entirely to the theme of work, arts and crafts in the country. With an area of 9,000 m², the museum is housed in the historic complex of the former Central Station of the Central do Brasil Railroad, in Praça Rui Barbosa, better known as Praça da Estação and the former Belo Horizonte Station of the Oeste de Minas Railroad. There is still a subway station and a railway branch in the same place. It is one of the best structured museums in Brazil in terms of organization, structure for exhibitions and use of audiovisual resources. The museum is an initiative of the Flávio Gutierrez Cultural Institute and was developed from the donation to the public patrimony of a collection of more than 2,000 pieces, from the 18th to the 20th centuries, by cultural entrepreneur Angela Gutierrez, who also worked in the formation of the Oratory Museum. , in Ouro Preto. The collection shows the wealth of popular production in the pre-industrial era: the crafts, arts and crafts that gave rise to contemporary professions. When walking through it, with the support of museographic resources and educational activities, the visitor will be able to see a broad panel of the history and social relations of work in Brazil, in the last three centuries.

Esperienza fantastica: Great. The impact of art and craft representations was accompanied by great satisfaction. I visited the Museu de Arte Ofício, during the period of integration with the Permanent Meeting of University Museums that took place at the Federal University of Belo Horizonte. “We don't want to see a small and a large Brazil, already made. No! “We do want this, to find out how they connect with each other; how each depends on the other, and how the two form a unique reality that exists concretely in what we call the homeland. ”(...)“ All of this leads us to discover that there are two basic ways of building Brazilian identity: o do Brasil, in one of them, we use accurate data; the demographic economic statistics, the GDP, GNP data and the numbers of per capita income and inflation, which always scares and terrifies us. We also talk about data related to the country's political and educational system, just to see that Brazil is not the country we would like it to be. This classification allows us to build a modern social identity, according to the criteria established by the European West after the French Revolution and the Industrial Revolution ”, quantitative and clear. That is how, we know and discover with surprise, that some societies define themselves. “Indeed, England, France, Germany and, above all, the United States are almost exclusively defined by means of this classificatory axis that is, in itself, his invention” (Damatta, 1998, p.17-18).

Esperienza fantastica: I got to know the museum through a partnership that MAO made with Senai Cedetem, where I and other colleagues in the woodworking course had the experience of producing miniatures of some collections, which my group was responsible for producing canga and canzil. The museum has incredible, highly educated, polite, helpful and attentive professionals. The visit to the museum is completely free and very worthwhile.

Esperienza fantastica: Although I did not have time for a quiet visit, I was fascinated by the wealth of the permanent collection. Many historical objects that compose a vivid and sometimes crude image of the history of Minas Gerais. Congratulations to the maintainers for financing a museum so beautiful and free of payment for the entrance and the staff, very attentive.

Erick Brazil 4 years ago

Esperienza fantastica: Excellent museum! Every Belo Horizonte native has to pay a visit to MAO! Anywhere in the world such a museum would cost a lot of money! Here in BH we have it for free!

Horacio Pizzolante 4 years ago

Esperienza fantastica: Sensational! Museum complete and very well preserved, a trip to other centuries and the rich history of Minas Gerais. Absolutely indispensable tour. Special highlight is the connecting corridor between the two parts of the museum, which could be just another corridor, but it has been transformed into a magical space integrated with the mural exhibition "How many offices does a museum make?". Essential visit.
