Excellent modern art collection in great architecture. We liked the cafe as well, it’s possible to have a drink and hop back into your visit. Terraces are great to catch a view over the dome and get some fresh air. Basement has changing collection. All together great place for a 3-4 hour visit, highly recommend.

Amazing modern collection. Also, huge shout out for being the only fine art museum we visited in Germany that addressed the colonial and problematic tendencies within the museum world while also giving voice to those often under represented in the fine art world.

Great museum with amazing pop art exhibitions

Wide ranging collection of modern art, equivalent to Tate Modern or similar in terms of size. Could have had an accessible plan available. Also shop was more of a bookshop and gift section was comparatively small but these were minor quibbles.

Truly fantastic museum with an impressive collection of 20th and 21st century art. My kids learned a lot and I was thrilled to see things I had only seen in books. Very hip. And air conditioned!

Very interesting contemporary art museum with artifacts from artists including Salvador Dali and Francis Bacon. I enjoyed my visit though I am not a modern art fan.

Our visit to this excellent art museum was tie well spent. We are normally happier spending many hours going round galleries of old masters, so I was astonished to find so much of interest in the modern art collection of the Ludwig Museum. Many excellent objects were very well-presented. In addition, we were delighted by the special exhibition of the work of Isamu Noguchi, which contained some most extraordinary images and items.

One of my favourite museums in Cologne. It has great art, an interesting way of presenting it and nice projects. I've been there multiple times and I think it's absolutely worth it.

Great modern art museum near the cathedral. Warhol, Picasso, Dali, Rothko, and the most recognizable artists of the 20th century. Three floors of inspiration.

I really enjoyed this gallery. Make sure you allow 2-3 hours as the gallery is quite large.

I love this museum of modern art! Great collection of Picasso, really cool Pop-art part, you can find also Rothko, Kandinsky, Dali, Malevich, Otto Dix, Warhol and many others. You need at least 3-4 hours to see all. There is free admission every first Thursday of the month for those who is registered in Cologne (Anmeldung required)

Since 1994 the Friends of the Museum Ludwig have honoured each year an international artist with the ‘Wolfgang Hahn Prize’, presented during the city's art fair Art Cologne. Both the annual highlight of the Friends' activities and one of the cultural features of Cologne and the Rhineland, this purchase prize is dedicated to the memory of Wolfgang Hahn 1924–1987 chief conservator and painting restorer at Wallraf Richartz Museum / Museum Ludwig and one of Cologne's most far-sighted collectors. The budget for the prize amounts to a maximum of 100,000 euros per annum. The museum also acquires a work from each prizewinner. The building is also home to the Kölner Philharmonic. The Heinrich-Böll-Platz, a public square designed by Dani Karavan, is above the concert hall at the north-east of the building. Unfortunately, during concerts people can't walk upon the square as it creates acoustic disturbances for the concert goers below. In 2016 the museum joined forces with the Bell Art Center to organize an unofficial retrospective of Anselm Kiefer, which opened at Beijing’s Central Academy of Fine Arts. The last stop on the tour in China was to be the new Jupiter Museum of Art in Shenzhen, but a delayed museum opening caused the works to be put into storage. At this point the museum lost track of the pieces and began to search for them. In January 2020 they finally located the pieces in a warehouse in Shenzhen and attempted to retrieve the piece. They were stopped, however, by Chinese authorities. Diplomatic action has been undertaken by the German Government, the City of Koblenz, and Kiefer himself, to secure the return of the pieces, which include the monumental work Pasiphae.

Is it in a museum because it's art, or is it art because it's in a museum? The only real art museum in Köln. Massive rooms bringing great painters/artists of all times. Definitely worth the visit. Polite staff, clean facilities & in the center of the city.

Numerous levels to visit and appreciate different kinds of artwork as well as some works by Picasso. Very enlightening and wonderful if you are a fan of art.

A great contemporary art museum that explores the many different art styles present throughout the 20th Century from expressionism to dadaism to surrealism to pop art. It also holds many Picasso pieces, which also include some of his sculptures and pottery as well! It is quite expansive and a very interesting museum to visit. Not to mention, there is an outside terrace that offers a beautiful view of the Cathedral

Big exhibition of moderni art, including Picasso, Dali, Kandinsky, Warhol, Ernst and many other great 20th century artists. Worth to spend 2-3 hours, on of the best modern art museums from my experience.

An amazing museum of a wide variety of art over 4 floors. It took us about 3 hours to walk around at a very leisurely pace. I would definitely come her again. There is a cafe/restaurant here, although we didn't go in. And a gift shop, full of a wide variety of books.

This museum has a collection that will astonish you with its vibrancy. Surely I never expected a European collector to be obsessed with Warhol yet here he was. as an American , I’m jealous this art will never be in my own country, and I’m happy Europeans can see it!

I can say it was the best modern art museum in Cologne to visit. It has a various number of pieces of art from different well-known artists like Picasso. There's also a pop art unit which is showcasing advertisements which I personally found really interesting. In general I can say it's a must-see in Cologne especially if you're interested in Modern Art.

Justin Taylor 5 years ago

Very modern and well designed. Coming into the lobby this placed looked like it was going to be empty. Once inside you really can admire the architecture of the building. The art is modern so some of it may not be enjoyable or appreciated by all but art is art. Great collection of Picasso’s on hand and some great other pieces scattered throughout. A definite must visit if in Cologne. 11€ admission seemed more than fair as well.

Located next to the Cathedral, great collection of modern art. It includes works from Pop Art, Abstract and Surrealism, and has one of the largest Picasso collections in Europe. There are painting from Dali, Warhol, Mondrian and many others. If you have the chance, it is very nice place to visit :)

I had a fun time at the museum. Good collection and their feature of special exhibition was very interesting - local artist, Gabriele Münter. Lots of light and easy to walk around to immerse yourself in the art. The lockers are free to use, just pay a deposit of €2 which you will easily get back at the end.
