Märkisches Museum

Before I visited Markisches Museum I had been to some other museums, attractions and tours in Berlin that dealt with various eras in the history of Berlin. What I like about Markisches Museum is that it presents succinctly the history of Berlin from the Middle Ages to modern times in chronological order that ties in all the various parts of the history of Berlin that I learnt from the other museums. The audio guide is very well done as well. Among my favourite exhibits there is a video of German school children being asked for their feelings about the reunification of Germany the day after the fall of the Berlin Wall; really makes history come alive ! I would highly recommend a visit to Markisches Museum to complement your visits to other museums (but not on its own as it does not go into much detail into any one period of Berlin’s history).

Really worth the visit. Interesting to learn about the history of the city and the audio tour was better than many I've experienced.

Excellent city history museum, with very knowledgeable staff, city models, maps and many other Berlin treasures and stories. All bilingual, including audio guide. Inside an interesting building, which somehow takes us back to an old Berlin we can only imagine. Very nice.

I enjoyed this museum. The collection can be best summed up as eclectic. The collection cuts a wide swath throughout Berlin's history and I did learn things, perhaps trivial but to those better informed than me, maybe they are important. It is clearly a labour of love on the part of all the employees, most of whom may be volunteers. While not up to the standards of the museums on Museum Island, there was a lot to see and in a very interesting setting. I would recommend this museum, particularly the free audio guide. At five Euros, this is a bit of bargain compared to other museums. It is also a short walk from here to Alexanderplatz and along the way, you can spend a bit of time at the bombed out church, the ruins of the Franziskaner-KlosterKirch, and proceed to the nearby telecommunications tower (Fernsehturm).

Very interesting to learn about the history of Berlin and how the city came to be. The audio guide is very helpful. A lot of cool artifacts!

One of the "secondary" museums in Berlin.... It's interesting as it covers the history of the city... Pretty good for kids with an audio tour both in English and German... You should check out the music demo where they play several of the "automated" pianos and music carts

This museum is incredible. The location is sweet, it's right by both the Spree and a small park. Admission is free on the first Wednesday of each month so I timed my visit to coincide with that awesome feature. You'll need at least two hours to absorb a fraction of what's on offer at this spectacular institution. Ideally four hours but spread over two visits. At a certain point it's overwhelming and you just have to decide to come back another day to learn more.

Great place to understand the history of Berlin, from the ice age until today. Audioguides are well made, although the information panels by themselves already give you plenty of informations. Staff is also super friendly

What a gem! I had never been before, and expected very little, but was blown away with the array of exhibits, stories told, and the building itself. We went as a family, and there was something for all of us from 10 to 70ish! Maybe not quite toddler territory, but otherwise all ages had something to see. We did not go to the café, but the small shop was well stocked. Audioguides were available in English as well, and included in the entrance tickets. A great place to learn more about Berlin and its turbulent history.

It is so thoughtfully laid out with areas to just sit and reflect. Others with drawing for children to do. Quite a lot of signs in English as well as an audio guide in English. We went on the first Wednesday of the month and, by chance, it was free!!! Even better

Fascinating museum found when looking for another museum!! Staff friendly, exhibits and stories varied, informative and great introduction to Berlin and its history. The building itself is a story on its own. Needed a full day or so to do justice to it,.

Very good museum with interesting exhibition about the history of Berlin. Not too complicated, made for common people and at the same time very thorough. Audio guides are also avaliable and are easy to use and are interesting to listen to. There is also a cafe by the museum.

It is one of the very nice place to see history of Berlin. And discover some interesting things. Some old photo viewer devices, alphabet for blind people, old 3d Berlin maps, real pieces from Brandenburger gate like head of famous horse... you should consider 4 5 hours to visit all of the museum. It is worth to do it. Also there are some painting and playing rooms for the small visitors. So it is enjoyful for all visitors. There are always some presentations or exhibitions, dont forget to check from web site. Audio guides are available in English and German.

Almost magical place, oscillating between a taste of gdr museum and exhibitions that are easy ahead of their competitors. If it is still on, visit the Great 1937 special exhibition! And create a museum box about your own Berlin experience!

The Stadtmuseum am Kölnischen Park is not only worth seeing for tourists. A visit Closing knowledge gaps to Berlin. Guided tours are entertaining and very lively. The staff very friendly and not pushy. As a Berliner you always discover something new. The announced revision of the exhibition as well as renovation of the exhibition space in the next few years gives hope for many surprises. The entrance fees are moderate. A visit to Berlin's history, in this wall, is always worthwhile.

History of Berlin from its founding to now. Building designed for this purpose over a century ago. Quite nicely done. Everything explained in German and English.

The museum has just opened its new permanent exhibition and it's great! The exhibition is accompanied by a very professionally done audio guide. When you get your audio guide, remember to get yourself registered (just your email needed) and when you leave the museum the system sends you the link to audio files and descriptions of the exhibits that you missed. Very useful!

So many gems and such wonderful ambience here. Try and time your visit to coincide with a demonstration of the many amazing old music machines on display. They've got player pianos, hurdy gurdys, grammophons, musical clocks, and some huge street organs that play old dance music.

I am a student of the Germn language school Kapitel Zwei. After my German course we made a very nice trip to this museum. The museum in general is not so big, but they have a lot of interesting things that are going to involve you, this museum is separated in two parts, downstairs and upstairs. Don’t forget to ask for the little speaker to hear all the histories and descriptions of the museum! I suggest starting downstairs, because there is an exhibition that according to the museum they change constantly, this time they had the opportunity to see the history of the music in Berlin and the life style of Turkish people in the ages of 80’s. I was not that interested in these topics but maybe is good to start there. After that, when you go upstairs, is a permanent exhibition of the history of berlin, in 2 words: It’s awesome!!!! You might need at least 3 or 4 hours to tour all the museum. When I say history of Berlin I mean all since 1200 A.C. till now, don’t forget to watch out about the little squares, where you have to put the speakers in to hear the description of what you are watching. I don’t want to disappoint no-one, but there are some descriptions just in German that I consider important to hear in English. Berlin has a lot of history to know, a lot of places to go and I can say that this is a good museum to visit, if you don’t know anything of the history of Berlin, because it resumes everything, and the best part is that they have videos and audios which make it an interactive place. It is not the typical museum where you lose the interest eventually. This is a good place to spend your money and your time, you will not regret it.

An excellent museum about Berlin. Very informative, very well presented and in an interesting building with helpful staff. Entrance fee is 7€. An audio guide in English is included - do take it. The presentation notes are also in English, but the audio guide tells additional stories. The permanent exhibition BerlinZEIT gives you so much that I had to take another day to go through it. The Courtyard Cafe helps you to take it all.

A very lively museum with an audio guide that personifies history artifacts and people so that they directly address the visitor and make the visit really interesting. You'll also be able to discover different objects that have marked the history of Berlin. Eventually, the staff is also really nice and available for any question. Note that the museum will be renovated in 2021 to make the visitor even more active. Look forward to it!

A very informative museum. There was a free gallery in the basement layer, unfortunately there were no English descriptions so I didn't really understand what was going on. You have to buy a ticket for the main display but the prices were very reasonable. It shows the history of Berlin from the 1200s to the modern day. An audio guide is given to you as part of your ticket and you can scan various objects to learn more about them. It takes a good few hours to get around the place and listen to all of the information. There is also a very relaxing park area around the museum which is nice for a stroll afterwards.

Great little-visited museum off the tourist track. One of the older museums in Berlin in a beautiful old building, it is all about Berlin and Brandenburg from the founding of the city up until the war. Has some cool pieces of weaponry and porcelain, etc. from the city. They redid a lot of the displays last year to include English text. Cool little Café as well!

This museum is chancing very rapidly. Now they have a very cool and informative echo expo on the ground floor. Must see...

Splendid museum. We went to see the exhibition: In the shadow of tomorrow. Highly recommended!

Must see. Showcases different time periods in the city, with artifacts and depictions of way of life, including during Nazi regime. The special exhibitions on the ground floor do not have English translations. There's a cute collection of children's art projects at the end.
